Build for the variety's final height
Check whether the packet describes a dwarf or tall pea before installing supports. Even a shorter variety benefits from something its tendrils can catch, while a tall one needs a more substantial frame. Put the structure in place before stems become tangled across the ground. Inspect its stability from both ends of the row. A support that stands well when empty must also hold foliage after rain, so secure weak joints before the plants conceal them.
Give tendrils something to grasp
Peas attach with slender tendrils rather than winding thick stems around a pole. Fine mesh, branching twigs or an appropriately designed support offer more catching points than a few smooth upright stakes. Choose materials that can be safely maintained and removed at the season's end. Guide early growth toward them without tying fragile stems tightly. If shoots repeatedly fall away, inspect the gap between plant and support rather than repeatedly forcing the same stem back into place.
Make picking possible from the beginning
Leave enough space to see and reach pods on both sides where practical. A row pressed against an inaccessible boundary can hide mature pods that stop contributing to a tender harvest. Know whether you are growing shelling peas, mangetout or sugar snaps, since their ideal picking stages differ. Keep the variety label visible at harvest height. Support the vine with one hand while picking with the other so a firm pod does not pull the whole plant away from its anchors.
Observe moisture during flowering and filling
Check the root zone as plants flower and pods develop, especially in containers. Dense foliage can hide dry soil, and a light shower may not wet it thoroughly. Keep harvest notes by sowing batch so later plantings can be timed around actual productivity. When a crop finishes, remove the exhausted vines carefully without tearing down supports that another crop uses. Review whether the frame height, mesh and path arrangement made picking comfortable. Those details often determine how much of a small pea crop is harvested at its best.
