Mark the space your body needs
Open the balcony door fully and walk through carrying a chair cushion, laundry basket or watering can. Mark the route those everyday movements require. Include space to turn and sit, not merely a narrow line between pots. Check how foliage will extend into that route at maturity. A container may fit perfectly on the floor while the plant above it obstructs the doorway. Establish the comfortable open area first, then arrange planting around its edges.
Confirm the practical limits
Before adding heavy containers or screens, establish the balcony's permitted loads and any relevant building restrictions with the responsible party. Wet growing media and water reservoirs weigh more than empty pots suggest. Do not infer structural capacity from appearance. Keep drainage routes, access points and required escape space clear. Choose secure containers and fittings suited to the location, particularly where wind could dislodge objects. This information should guide the number and type of planters before the visual arrangement is finalised.
Group by access as well as appearance
Place frequently harvested or thirsty plants where they can be reached without moving other pots. Use a restrained group of containers instead of filling every edge with small vessels. If a corner is difficult to inspect, choose a manageable plant rather than one needing regular deadheading or pest checks. Avoid hanging foliage directly over the route at face height. Trial the layout with empty containers for a few days; repeated collisions or awkward turns are easier to solve before the pots are full.
Plan where water will go
Balconies may receive little rain beneath an overhang even when the street is wet. Check moisture directly and arrange watering so runoff does not cause problems below. Saucers can protect surfaces, but they should not leave unsuitable plants standing in water. Keep a small cleaning kit and a clear place to set down the watering can. Review the arrangement during windy and hot weather as well as on a calm morning. A successful balcony remains comfortable to use when the plants have reached their fullest size.
